Vintage Model Trains: Aristo Craft Brass 0-6-6-0

Brass models were once the only option for a quality steam locomotive model. While a small amount of Brass model importers still exist, they are few and far between with plastic model manufacturers making the vast majority of locomotives in the US market. This model (while we're unsure of the date made) represents what we consider the height of Brass steam models.

According to the Western Division of the TCA, Aristo Craft HO Brass was produced in the 1950's and 60's (source: http://www.tcawestern.org/aristo.htm).

Our model came in as a donation to the museum I manage, and was unfortunately without the orginal box. However if memory serves me right, the foam in those old Brass boxes was unfavorable to the model, as it decomposed and stuck to the models.

The 0-6-6-0 steamlocomotive was a rare prototype, with only a handful produced for railroads like CP, NYC, B&O & KCS. WM also rostered a few which were rebuilt from 2-6-6-2.

For a model from the 1950's it holds up well to modern detail standards. The Brass construction allows for enough weight to make it a viable puller.

The model was tested, and really didn't run well. It'll be heading into the private collection of a museum employee, who plans to rebuild the drive train, likely replacing the motor and adding DCC. Intention is to eventually operate the model on the North County Model Railroad Society layout in Oceanside CA.

I for one can't wait to see the model finished. I honestly think the paint on the model is incredible, and he should just add lettering and clear coat to protect the model from future use.
