Santa Fe took an unusual step to get their proposed merger, the Ill-Fated SPSF merger, approved.
The basis of this story, and model, was the Ill-fated SPSF merger. Santa Fe painted this boxcar, and subsequently had members of the general public, and interested shippers, sign the boxcar in support of the merger. Unfortunately the merger was still denied, and this boxcar did not last long on the rails.
In 2019 Athearn released this model. It has been on my desired list for a while, although it'll never really see true track time.
For the prototype modelers, if you model the SPSF merger era, 1986-1987, this model could theoretically operate on your layout! For the rest of us, it's just a cool piece of history.
